Summer 2026 marks another important step in the journey to establishing the Kansas City Quilt Museum — from development approval, through months of planning, to the first visible work on site.
March 16, 2019
The Decision
Founder Linda Houston makes the decision to build a quilt museum, turning a lifelong love of quilting into the seed of a new institution.
2020 – 2021
Covid Pandemic Interruption
The COVID-19 pandemic brings a period of interruption, pausing progress as the world responds to the global health crisis.
June 7, 2021
Land Identified
A parcel of land is identified in The Legends area of Kansas City, Kansas — a future home begins to take shape.
June 22, 2021
Land Secured
The museum closes on the land, beating out other interested buyers and securing its future site.
2022 – 2024
Property Line Negotiations
The museum negotiates agreements with adjoining property owners to adjust property lines to the benefit of all.
2022 – 2025
Shaping the Vision
As a real estate developer who has a deep love of quilts, founder Linda Houston uses her expertise to work with architects to achieve her vision for the museum's layout and design.
September 2025
Development Approval
The Kansas City Quilt Museum receives development approval from Wyandotte County, KS (WYCO), formally clearing the way for the project to move forward.
Fall 2025 – Summer 2026
Planning & Development
Since receiving approval, the project continues to advance through the collaborative work of our board members, architects, builders, engineers, designers, and staff.
